Tatting is an old fashioned craft dating to the early 17th century. This technique is used to handcraft a particularly durable lace from a series of knots and loops.[1] Tatting can be used to make lace edging as well as doilies, collars, accessories such as earrings and necklaces, and other decorative pieces such as Christmas ornaments or bookmarks. The lace is formed by a pattern of rings and chains and can be made with the use of either a shuttle or a needle. Both techniques will be demonstrated with an emphasis on needle tatting.
